Today we left Boston to drive north. To Portland, Maine, to be exact.
But we didn’t go straight to Portland. First stop is Salem. Two reasons: lunch at an original diner, and the Witch museum. Salem is known for the witch hunting that went on at the end of the 17th century. There are a number of museums and tours can can take. We went to the Salem Witch Museum. Yes, it was corny. But it was fun as well and we even learned the real story behind the Salem witches.
After the trip to Salem and the witch hunting, it was time for lunch. One of Karin’s wishes was to go to a real original diner. In Holland we decided that the one in Salem was going to be the one. And we were not disappointed. It was an original diner, food was cheap but really good, and the waitress was a lot of fun.
Next: Portland. But of course we had to stop at teh outlet stores in Kittery. I had to buy a new suitcase, but ended up with more: new ski pants, gloves, etc. Karin also continued shopping 🙂
But in the end we got to Portland and our accommodation: the Pomegranate Inn. We had the best room at this bed & breakfast: a room with a seperate living room, a fireplace, large bathroom, kingsize bed, etc. Wonderful!
We didn’t have too much time to enjoy the room, because we had dinner reservations at the White Barn Inn in Kennebunk (the area where many US presidents have their holidays!). This was by far the most exclusive dining experience we have ever had on our travels! It turns out that this place is really exclusive. Our car was valet parked (we weren’t even allowed to park ourselves…), and the dress code was formal.
Dinner was excellent! We had a 9-course tasting many, which really exceeded our expectations. It was not cheap. No sir. But keep in mind: this was our Christmas dinner.
After the dinner, which tool a few hours, also non-American, we headed back to the Inn for our personal Christmas gifts ‘spectacle’.
It was another very good day in New England. Not a cheap one. But still a very good one!
